The form with ā, however, is often found in compds. outside N.I., e.g. hwalbak (see below), hwalkrang (L.Sc. krang, sb., the body of a whale divested of the blubber), hwalsløb (see below). 2) metaph.: long, rolling, unbroken wave; mostly in pl., hwals [hwāls], applied to waves of this description. In the same sense hwalbak, prop. the back of a whale.
